Miami Herald Proves Significant Benefits using

ProImage OnColor ECO Ink Optimization Solution

-      ROI in less than three months

-      use of existing resources make it more stable and robust

-      improved quality with less ink rub-off and set-off

Princeton, NJ – 29th July, 2008: ProImage has today announced that the Miami Herald, a McClatchy newspaper, has implemented its OnColor ECO ink optimization software, and is already experiencing major benefits.

By implementing ink optimization into its production workflow, the Miami Herald saved the initial cost of the software in less than three months.  The annual savings will therefore be ‘significant’ according to Director of Prepress and Printing Operations, Michael Christopher. It has also reduced its carbon footprint.

“The major benefits are reduced ink expense as well as improved quality - and performance has well exceeded our expectations,” states Michael Christopher. “There’s also significantly less ink rub-off and set-off. Plus, decreased ink and water on the web is a major benefit to overall quality.”

The Miami Herald evaluated ink optimization solutions from a number of vendors, but after exhaustive tests selected ProImage OnColor ECO due to advantages that included ease of integration into its production workflow, its user-friendly interface, and the simple installation process. The OnColor ECO reporting wizard and effective error notification features also easily blended into the existing workflow. In addition, OnColor ECO software takes advantage of existing resources such as RIPs and Distiller servers making it more stable and robust.

“The difference in ink used (or not used) by implementing OnColor ECO was carefully measured over a four week test period, and the results found were that between 25% and 39% of color inks were saved, while 23% more black ink was used, providing a financial saving of up to 25% of our total ink cost.

“The lack of second fold roller marks, and the elimination of almost all offsetting from page-to-page is also very noticeable,” confirms Michael Christopher. “For our users, the OnColor ECO GUI provides simple input, with manipulation sliders for Gray Component Replacement (GCR), mid-tones, and Total Ink Density. ProImage staff was knowledgeable and assisted in selecting the best press profile that provided optimal GCR savings.

“In addition, OnColor ECO's ability to maintain plate furniture and graybars intact is a key feature of the software. Other software solutions provide the same options, however they require RIP intervention and/or PostScript scripting commands,” he adds. “We further found that the implementation of ink optimization allowed us to decrease the amount of sharpening we were doing with Photoshop, which saves us time.”
